Dr. Barry Smith, Board Member, Emeritus

DR. BARRY H. SMITH received his undergraduate education (BA) at Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, with the Class of 1965; his PhD in Biology/Neurobiology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1968; and his MD from Cornell University Medical College in 1972. He completed a surgical internship and a year of general surgery residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York City before entering neurosurgical residency at New York Hospital and then Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Smith was Program Director of the Neurosciences Research Program at MIT from 1976-1978 and then spent five years (1978-1983) at the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke (NINCDS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, where he became Deputy Chief of Surgical Neurology.

In 1983, Dr. Smith moved to Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he continued his research and clinical work in glial cell biology and tumors. He also became Scientific and Medical Director of the Dreyfus Medical Foundation in 1984, and Director of the Health Foundation (now the Dreyfus Health Foundation), a division of The Rogosin Institute at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York City, in 1988, a position that he holds at present. He also is currently Senior Vice President of The Rogosin Institute and Clinical Professor of Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

Dr. Smith's current research interests include cancer biology and therapeutics, diabetes, and the mechanisms of action of anticonvulsants (especially phenytoin) in seizure and non-seizure disorders. He also has, through the Dreyfus Health Foundation, worked to further the enhancement of basic and clinical science health care and to promote problem-solving skills among health professionals and others (more than 20,000) in over 30 countries around the world. He is the author of more than 100 scientific and clinical papers and Co-Editor of Elsevier’s Encyclopedia of Neuroscience. Dr. Smith is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the American Pain Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Science, Alpha Omega Alpha, Sigma Xi, the American Medical Association, the Global Health Council, and the American Public Health Association, among others. He serves on the boards of the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation, the Kornfeld Foundation, and the New York City Rescue Mission. He is also a member of the Advisory Council of the Atlantic Legal Foundation and Global Health Action.
